What is cardiac arrest?

Cardiac arrest is defined as a sudden stopping of heart activity, which means that the heart unexpectedly ceases to pump blood effectively. This condition can occur due to various factors, including an arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) or a heart attack. When cardiac arrest happens, blood flow to the brain and other vital organs is significantly disrupted, leading to loss of consciousness and, if not addressed immediately, can result in death.

The rapid onset of this condition distinguishes it from other heart-related issues, such as a gradual decrease in heart function or a temporary heart condition, which might evolve over time. Furthermore, a prolonged heart murmur indicates abnormal blood flow but does not signify an immediate stoppage of heart activity, making it fundamentally different from cardiac arrest.
